Born and raised on Long Island, NY, Devoti made his way from Merrick to Baltimore, MD, where he attended and graduated from Loyola University, earning a BA in Communications/Advertising with a Minor in Business. While there, Devoti competed on the #1 nationally ranked Loyola Greyhounds Men's Lacrosse Team, going to a Final Four his freshman year. After graduation, James traveled to West Africa to volunteer his time and efforts in Ghana before embarking on a career in the entertainment industry. James has one older brother, John Devoti who served in Afghanistan in 2004 and Iraq in 2008. He is currently a Lt. Colonel in the United States Marine Corps. Devoti's father, Robert, passed away to lung cancer when James was only thirteen years old. He served as a sniper with the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam. His mother, Barbara, who resided in Merrick, New York, until her passing in 2021 was a retired teacher and a Hall of Fame inductee for the Massapequa public school district. James attributes his work ethic, persistence and determination to the values she instilled in he and his brother as a single mother.

As a boy, Di Giacomo recalls watching lots of comic's like Benny Hill, Rowan Atkinson, Monty Python, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, The 3 Stooges, Chevy Chase, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Robin Williams -- as a teenager he really connected with Jim Carrey though. He recalls Carrey being a huge influence on his decision to become an actor. Till this day people say you remind me of Jim Carrey, which always makes Di Giacomo smile. In 2011, Di Giacomo decided to form a production company, Undecided Pictures., where he teamed up with writer David Mattia on a couple ideas he had. One was a TV pilot called Have You Met Miss Jones, in which Di Giacomo and Mattia both created/wrote and executive produced. Di Giacomo also played the title character, Angelina Jones. The pilot also features Dot Jones, James Kyson, the late great Art LaFleur and the iconic Patty McCormack (The Bad Seed).
